Breathing Room - A calm walk by the lake. |
If possible make it a weekly thing to pause everything. Schedules/deadlines will always be there yet you may not if you don't take time for yourself. I seldom took that advice until I began to feel like the hamster spinning non-stop on that wheel.
Admittedly it felt strange to focus only on me. My mind kept veering towards all the things that were pending. It wasn't hard to regroup after I reminded myself about the importance of taking care of myself. Interruptions will come yet let them go, they can wait a few minutes.
I used to look forward to the weekends as that was work free time. Then the weekends became all work and no fun. It stayed like that for a long time. One day I said enough and began to reclaim my time, it was necessary.
To put yourself first isn't being selfish. You have to be your priority. You're not abandoning your world, you're strengthening yourself. If you find it hard to take a break or if someone in your life doesn't support your need to recharge then may I suggest you weigh the consequences if you keep going without a break. At least set time aside to think about that for a little while.
